Growing Up - by Brad

Over the past week I have noticed Elliott entering into a new phase of his childhood. Having a newborn around the house certainly does make Elliott look older. He has been very gentle with his new baby brother. He loves to hold him and is constantly commenting on how cute Spencer is, or how tiny his fingers are. This is a huge change from when Wesley was born. Elliott didn't know the meaning of the word "gentle". Now Elliott has been talking about another baby when he turns 6... but we know that won't happen because we can't ruin the perfect spacing!

Also, this weekend my sister and her family came over from Seattle to visit Spencer (and us too). A few of us went hiking up Castle Rock (the hill behind our house) and Elliott did amazingly well. We may have been slow going, but even
when we hiked up the steep slippery trails, he was brave and tried to keep up with his 9 and 7 year old cousins Ryan and Jake. We had a great time.

However, Elliott's growing up really hit me this morning after church. Elliott started going to Sunday school in the fall after he turned 4. Once church is done, we typically go downstairs to the nursery to pick up Wesley and also to Elliott's Sunday school room to pick him up.

This was the first week back to church since Spencer was born (he was only 1 hour old last Sunday so we decided to skip), so we talked a little longer before heading down to pick up Wes and Elliott. As we were talking I saw Elliott darting between people and making his way toward US! This may not seem to be a huge step of independence to you, but to me, this showed that he is no longer a little kid who needs his parents to find him... he can find us. I still can't believe that he is four.

Spencer - by Brad

We came home this morning around 10:00, so I am finally getting around to posting a few pictures.

Shortly after the boys got to see Spencer for the first time, they got to hold him. They have been very excited about Spencer and have surprisingly been very gentle.

The proud new mom, shortly after Spencer was born.
Loving her new baby!

Spencer is home now and is facing many poking fingers.

Also, Spencer made me proud by being born on the right day!

And We're Off! - by Brad

Lindsey has been having big contractions about 3 minutes apart for the past hour. WE ARE HEADED TO THE HOSPITAL!!

More news to come soon!

[I would post a picture of Lindsey fighting through the contractions, but I don't have that kind of time]

Nesting + - by Brad

Lindsey is overdue. She had an appointment yesterday and the doctor said that "things" were "progressing" but she should schedule an appointment to consider being induced on Monday. However, I was home at lunch today and Lindsey said that she thinks "stuff" is happening, so she feels like it will be soon.

Lindsey has been nesting all week. Today I found her pulling all the food out of the fridge, cleaning, and rearranging the shelves. This has been the norm in our house for several days now.

To Lindsey's chagrin, I am hoping for Spencer to be born Sunday. The reason is that Elliott's birthday was September 25th, 2002 and Wesley's birthday was November 23, 2004. So if Spencer is born on January 21st, 2007, the boys will be spaced perfectly even. They would be 2 years, 2 months, less 2 days apart from each other.

How cool would that be?

The Dude's Due - by Brad

Spencer is due today, and I have the day off because of MLK. However, we both feel that he is going to be late (Spencer, not MLK... although they are both "late" but in different ways).

So far we have enjoyed a lazy morning. Elliott and Wesley snuggled up together to listen to a few songs on their little mp3 player... proving that they DO like each other once in a while!

Also, I recently heard an instrumental group that I like. If you would be interested in an acoustic rock-flamenco sound, then you might like a group called "Rodrigo y Gabriela". They have an interesting guitar sound...

Still Nothing... - by Brad we wait some more.

Elliott was 2 days late, but Wesley was 2 days early.
Maybe Spencer will be more punctual than his brothers.

Baby & Wind - by Brad

Lindsey had a doctor's appointment today and... nothing is happening.

I guess she can still go into labor at any time, but it would be nice if it looked like it was going to be soon. So we continue to wait. Lindsey isn't getting any more comfortable as time goes on.

In other news... Sunday evening we had a big wind storm with gusts up to 70 mph. Our house only lost one strip of gutter, so we fared better than a lot of folks around here. The wind was strong enough to toss our barbecue at least 5 feet in the air on top our our retaining wall in our backyard. Crazy stuff.

Son So Soon? - by Brad

Wow, according to the Spence-O-Meter, we have just 10 days until Spencer is due! It sure doesn't seem like we are prepared to take care of a newborn already (but according to Lindsey we are)!

Recently, our life has been filled with two boys who bring energy to our family. It seems like they can't sit still and all they want to do is move. The quiet, snugly moments still happen, but they usually only last about 15 seconds.

I am very excited that in about 10 days (hopefully less) I will be able to hold my new fragile son. One who cannot jump off my lap, or climb up my leg, or talk about Star Wars non-stop. Don't get me wrong, these are fun moments with my older boys. However, there is a different kind of joy that comes from a newborn son who can't do anything for himself and who takes comfort in the arms of his parents.

I will soon be looking for opportunities to sneak Spencer away from everyone and enjoy his quiet little company.

Phour Year Old Photographer - by Brad

Elliott is fascinated with our digital camera and loves taking pictures. Since we bought a new camera, we gave Elliott our old one. Now he is taking as many pictures as we do.

Wesley, after a bath, but still needing a haircut.

This was supposed to be a picture of Lindsey and I, but when Wesley butted in, the view had to adjust.

Wesley, with his mouth full of a Hostess Cup Cake.

You always need a self-taken, arms-length away portrait.

And finally, Mike and Becky were here this weekend. Mike was taking a picture of Elliott, so Elliott thought he would take a picture of Mike at the same time. I might need to get some pictures from Mike so I can blog about the weekend unless he posts a few himself.
